Factors affecting incidental L2 vocabulary acquisition and retention in a game-enhanced learning environment

Abstract In recent years, the number of studies investigating effectiveness using digital games for incidental second language (L2) vocabulary learning has been rapidly increasing; however, there is still a lack research identifying factors that affect L2 learning. Hence, current study examined vocabulary-related (word level, exposure frequency, salience) and learner-related (language proficiency, interest, viewing captions) variables investigated affecting EFL students’ in use vernacular (noneducational) murder mystery game ( N = 59). The employed quantitative method descriptive inferential statistics (repeated measures ANOVA multiple linear regression). results showed playing greatly facilitated acquisition retention. Among variables, found only salience significantly influenced acquisition. Regarding interest captions were positively related to learning, whereas their proficiency levels negatively correlated. conscious attention, conjunction with word, was main facilitating factor retention game-enhanced environment. suggested pedagogical implications through play based on study.
